Why Your HP Laptop Keeps Disconnecting from Wi-Fi

Why does my HP laptop keep disconnecting from Wi-Fi?

Your HP laptop can keep disconnecting from Wi-Fi because  airplane mode is switched ON, the network drivers have are corrupted, or the drivers are outdated.

  • Airplane mode is switched ON
  • An issue with the network drivers
  • Outdated drivers

Airplane mode is switched ON

Some HP laptop models have a button with the airplane symbol. If this button is enabled, then your laptop may keep getting disconnected from the network. Disabling this button or symbol can help you to resolve this problem easily.

An issue with the network drivers

Your laptop is equipped with multiple network drivers which allow you to connect to different networks. If your network drivers have become corrupt, you might notice that the laptop keeps getting disconnected from Wi-Fi. Uninstalling the corrupt drivers and reinstalling them again will solve the problem.

Outdated drivers

If the network drivers are outdated and have not been updated for a long time, then they might stop working and you might have problems connecting to Wi-Fi. Updating the network drivers to their latest versions can help resolve this problem.

Why is my Wi-Fi disabled on my HP laptop?

Your Wi-Fi may be disabled on your HP laptop because of a disabled TCP/IP connection, Winsock catalog issues or an issue with the network adapter. These issues can be fixed by following these steps.

Resetting the TCP/IP connection

  1. Open the Command Prompt window in administrator mode.
  2. Type the ‘netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt‘ command.
  3. Restart the system for the command to work.

Resetting the Winsock catalog

  1. Open the Command Prompt app. You can also press the ‘Windows’ and ‘R’ keys together to open the Run window and type ‘cmd’.
  2. Type the ‘netsh Winsock reset’ This usually works for HP ProBook 635 Aero G7 models.
  3. Restart the computer to check if the Winsock has been reset.

Updating the network adapters

If you feel that the issues are caused by the network adapters, then you will need to download their latest versions.

  1. Uninstall the existing drivers and adapters.
  2. Install the latest version of the adapters.

Why is my HP laptop Wi-Fi not working?

Your HP laptop Wi-Fi may not be working due to a network driver issue or other system or hardware issues.

Check for updates of the Wi-Fi drivers and the LAN drivers from their official websites. Keep all the drivers updated to the latest version.

Outdated drivers are a common problem in the HP Envy 14-eb0000na and HP EliteBook x360 1040 models.

You can also try the following steps to resolve the problem:

  1. Disconnect all the network devices and power OFF the laptop.
  2. Perform a hard reset and turn the laptop ON again. Keep in mind the data might be erased while performing a hard reset. So, it is advisable to have a backup of all the data before attempting this.

If the above two methods don’t work, then you can try out a Microsoft system restore as the last resort to help you fix the network connectivity issues.

Why does my Wi-Fi disconnect when I close my laptop HP?

Your Wi-Fi may be getting disconnected when you close your HP laptop because of the power saving mode setting or the battery management mode setting.

  1. Open the ‘Device Manager’ window.
  2. Click the ‘Wi-Fi Settings’ option.
  3. Click the ‘Power Management’ tab.
  4. Press the button to disable network adapters when the computer sleeps.

If your issue is still not yet resolved, you can navigate to the ‘Advanced Power Options’.

  1. Click the ‘System’ option in the ‘Control Panel’.
  2. Click the ‘Power & Sleep’ option from the left panel.
  3. Click the ‘Advanced Power Options’ link.
  4. Select the ‘Wireless Adapter Settings’ option.
  5. Set the performance to the maximum levels for both the Plugged in and Battery options.

This will disable all the power-saving options, thereby enabling Wi-Fi even when the system is closed.

How do I stop my laptop from disconnecting from my Wi-Fi?

You can stop your laptop from disconnecting from Wi-Fi by updating an outdated network adapter or adjusting the scan valid interval.

To fix this issue in an HP Envy 15 laptop, you can follow some simple steps which are listed below.

  1. Open the ‘Control Panel’ and search for ‘Network Devices’.
  2. Click the ‘Network Adapters’ and ‘Drivers’ tab.
  3. Right-click on the ‘Network Adapters’ and update them to install the latest versions. You may need to restart the computer to see the changes.

If your system still doesn’t work, you may need to reset the scan time interval. The longer this gap, the higher are the chances that your laptop will keep getting disconnected from Wi-Fi.

  1. Open the ‘Run’ window and type the ‘cpl’ command to open the Wireless/Network Adapter window.
  2. Click the ‘Properties’ button followed by the ‘Networking’ tab.
  3. Click the ‘Configure’ button.
  4. Click ‘Advanced Settings’ and select the ‘scan valid interval’ as 120s.

HP laptop Wi-Fi not working after sleep

Your HP laptop Wi-Fi may not be working after sleep because of a setting that makes the laptop go to sleep mode to save power or an outdated or older version of the drivers and/or chipset installed.

You can deactivate the sleep setting by following the steps given below.

  1. Open the ‘Command Prompt’ window.
  2. Type the ‘sc config storsvc type= own’

This command will restore the network adapter settings to the default values and will most likely fix the issue. This has been found to work for most of the HP Spectre x360 models.

You can also update the drivers to their latest versions from the websites of their manufacturers as mentioned earlier. A reset followed by the updates will often resolve the problem.0

In some cases, you may have to uninstall the old versions of the drivers before installing the new versions.

If the above two methods don’t help to resolve the issue, you can try the following steps.

  1. Open ‘Devices’ and click the ‘Wireless Networks’ option.
  2. Click the ‘Properties’ tab.
  3. Uncheck the ‘Allow the device to turn off to save power’ checkbox.

If you have an older model laptop like the HP ZBook Studio G7, you can consider updating the BIOS and the chipset to their latest versions. Reboot your system to see if the issue is resolved.

HP laptop Wi-Fi not working after Windows 10 update

The HP laptop may not be working after a Windows 10 update because of an older version of the BIOS setup that causes your HP laptop to stop connecting to Wi-Fi after the Windows 10 update.

Updating the BIOS setup to the latest one can fix this problem immediately. This is especially true in the case of HP notebook models like 5-ac021ds, 15-ac022ds that have a Wi-Fi adapter with the Realtek RTL8188EE 802.11 b/g/n configuration. Such models need a BIOS update to fix the problem.

If applying the BIOS update still didn’t fix your issue then you can try one of the following steps.

  1. Open the ‘Wireless Network’ panel.
  2. Click ‘Troubleshooting Options’
  3. Run a diagnostic test.
  4. This test will give you a list of issues with the system. Expand each of them to check the possible root causes and ways to fix the issues.
  5. Follow the steps mentioned above to resolve the problem.
  6. Rerun the diagnostics test until all the issues are resolved. You may have to do this a few times to clear all the problems.

Once all the issues are resolved, you should be able to connect to Wi-Fi.

You can also try any of the two methods given below.

  • Check if the button with the wireless symbol is pressed on your laptop. You can check this by pressing on the Wi-Fi icon in the taskbar. If not, then pressing the button will help fix the issue most of the time.
  • Install the HP support assistant. This will tell you which drivers/adapters are outdated and will not work properly in your system. Updating these drivers will fix the problem automatically.
